Water Department to flush water mains beginning Monday

Conway Corporation will begin flushing the city’s water mains Monday, May 5. The process, which will take approximately two weeks, will begin on the northwest edge of the city and move east and south.

Fire hydrants will be opened throughout the city and allowed to "flush" until water runs clear. According to water department superintendent, David Bradley, “the procedure facilitates circulation of water in our underground mains and prevents build up of mineral deposits.”

Residents may experience low water pressure while crews are flushing in their area. After flushing, tap water may appear “brownish.”  “Let your tap run for several minutes until the water released is clear. The colored water is unsightly, but still safe for consumption,” said Bradley

Conway Corporation to fund local scholarships

Conway Corporation’s board of directors approved the establishment of permanent scholarship endowments at the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College and Central Baptist College during its April 15 meeting, according to Board Chairman Tom Courtway.

“We are continuing a long tradition in our support of higher education in Conway,” said Courtway.

“We will utilize $600,000 to be paid $200,000 per year for three years,” said Courtway. “The endowments will be funded from a portion of the earnings on the electric department reserve funds, and scholarships awarded to students who graduate from high schools in the City of Conway or, if home schooled, resided in Conway Corporation’s service area.”

“This is an investment in people,” said CEO Richard Arnold. “Conway Corporation has its foundation in supporting higher education in our community, and we are proud to build on that foundation with this investment in human capital,” he added.

“Funds will be placed in a permanent scholarship endowment with only 5 percent of the fund balance spent each year. So, the contribution will be there in perpetuity,” said Arnold. At the end of the three-year period, UCA will have received $300,000; Hendrix $200,000 and Central Baptist $100,000.

Scholarships will be awarded by each institution, with the first scholarships awarded for the fall 2009 semester.

Conway Corporation was established in 1929 as the community faced the threat of loosing Hendrix College and Central Baptist College. At that time, the Corporation was given the lease on Conway’s electric system and a franchise. Bonds in the amount of $215,000 were issued and given to each of the three colleges, along with the public and parochial schools.

Conway Corporation Internet speeds increase, rates decrease

Conway Corporation’s Broadband Internet recently increased the speeds on its basic and premium Internet service.

Basic residential Internet service for one computer now includes speeds of 4 Mbps downstream and 512 Kbps upstream. The service also increased the number of e-mail accounts available from four to six accounts.

Basic service is available for $29.95 per month. However, new customers can currently subscribe to the service at an introductory rate of $19.95 per month for the first three months.

Premium residential service increased from 4 Mbps to 8 Mbps downstream and from 512 Kbps to 758 Kbps upstream. In addition to the speed increases, customers can now enjoy this service at a discounted rate of $37.95.

"We have been providing excellent Internet service for over 10 years," said Broadband & Video Manager Jason Hansen. "Today the average customer sends e-mail and surfs the Web, but more and more customers are downloading movies and videos and need the faster speeds," said Hansen.
