The 1990s
Here are highlights of some of the issues and projects undertaken by the Conway Corporation from 1990 – 1999.
1990
JULY: Customer service area established in Prairie Street location
1991
Conway Corporation Service Center was completed. All electric, water, wastewater and electronic operations were moved to the new South Harkrider location in late 1991.
1992
$13 million wastewater treatment expansion project was begun, including a new multi-cell partial mix aerated lagoon at Tucker Creek
MAY: Headend equipment moved to general office site using space vacated when Service Center move completed
1993
Refinanced $5.9 million in water revenue bonds and $27.1 million in electric revenue bonds at a savings of $1.889 million and $8 million respectively over the life of the issue.
1994
May: Prairie Street office remodeled.
1995
MAY: Local ad insertion begins
NOVEMBER: Construction on citywide cable conversion to a fiber-coax hybrid began. Project cost was estimated at $5.6 million
NOVEMBER: Project began to increase city’s water storage capacity, including construction of 8 million gallon tank near the Gleason Water Treatment Plant
1996
FEBRUARY: Cable system fiber-coax rebuild completed
1997
Three substations were purchased from Entergy at a cost of $5.955 million including bond costs.
APRIL: Work complete on cable modem accessed Internet services to be offered over the city’s new broadband cable system. New power agreement reached with Entergy, expected to save some $12.4 million in power costs by end of year 2000.
APRIL: Conway Corporation became the third in the country and fifth in the world to offer high speed, broadband cable Internet service.
1998
MAY: GIS Program Implemented
JULY: Internet bandwidth expansion
DECEMBER: Odectic cameras installed at major intersections – video controlled traffic monitoring
