Reduce Energy Vampires
Energy vampires are devices that continue to use electricity even when turned off. They lurk in your home as phone chargers, coffee pots, computer cords and more accounting for as much as 20 percent of your total monthly statement.
Wasting electricity is scary, but it’s easy to slay your energy vampires with four simple tips:
UNPLUG As simple as it sounds, all you need to do is unplug electronics not in use. It might not work for some items, but if you have devices or appliances you don’t use regularly, consider unplugging them completely until the next time you actually use it. From an extra TV in a back bedroom used only for visitors or a coffee pot used only on the weekends, these devices add to your energy use each month.
USE POWER STRIPS Power strips let you toggle the power flow on and off for multiple devices at a single time. Plug wall warts and bricks in power strips, and turn the strip off when not needed. Using smart power strips makes it even easier by turning off idle electronics without any additional steps from you.
GO TO SLEEP Curb idle time by making use of energy-saving features – like sleep mode – on computers and other devices.
MAKE SMART UPGRADES Consider replacing your outdated appliances with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR devices. They have a lower standby consumption than average appliances and use less energy all around.
